PHILADELPHIA -- Approaches to treating elderly cancer patients are evolving as more of the population ages and the need for specialized care becomes more evident.

To address these issues and others, national thought leaders in geriatric oncology will gather at a unique symposium at the Kimmel Cancer Center at Jefferson (KCC) in Philadelphia on Friday, March 9, 2012, where they will present an overview of the latest advances in the understanding and treatment of cancer in older adults in an effort to impact patient care.

Outside of the annual American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) meeting, this is the first regional symposium of its kind that would be addressing the needs of senior adults.

The all-day symposium, "The New Battlefront: Geriatric Oncology," part of an annual series at the KCC, will be held at the Bluemle Life Sciences Building on Jefferson's campus. Co-hosted by the KCC Cancer Network and Rothman Institute at Jefferson, it will provide comprehensive updates on basic science research and the latest updates on chemotherapy, surgery, and radiation in the care of senior adult patients.

Are We Ready?

Geriatric patients make up 60 percent of new cancer diagnoses and 70 percent of all cancer deaths. And those numbers are expected to increase as the geriatric population doubles in size by 2030.

These patients also often must battle cancer in the context of multiple chronic conditions, decreased organ reserve, and all too often cognitive impairments. What's more, there's currently a shortage of geriatric oncology physicians to treat them.

"As the challenges of treating elderly patients become increasingly more apparent, a paradigm shift in cancer care will most likely have to occur if we want to better serve this population," said Andrew E. Chapman, DO, FACP, who directs the KCC's Senior Adult Oncology Center along with Christine A. Arenson, M.D, of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Thomas Jefferson University Hospital . "Recognizing and addressing the particular co-morbidities, functional, and cognitive concerns, and identifying collaborations with other disciplines will help us better serve the population."

A joint effort between the Departments of Medical Oncology and Family and Community Medicine, Division of Geriatrics, KCC's Senior Adult Oncology Center provides a comprehensive assessment, usually during a single visit, to identify problems related to aging and cancer. The program has medical oncologists, a geriatrician, a nurse navigator, a pharmacist specially trained in oncology and geriatrics, a registered dietician, and a social worker.

Facing this New Battlefront Together

During the symposium, the full spectrum of geriatric oncology care and research will be discussed by clinicians and researchers from top institutions, including Jan van Duersen, Ph.D., of the Robert and Arlene Kogod Center on Aging at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minn., and Arati V. Rao, M.D. of Duke University's Division of Geriatrics.

The conference will provide an overview of the biology of cancer in aging, describe the state-of-the-art model of Shared Care for older cancer patients, and review critical issues of chemotherapy toxicity and optimal chemotherapy management.

Specific concerns for radiation therapy and surgery in the geriatric oncology patient will be also addressed. Finally, the latest advances in the management of hematologic and solid malignancies in the elderly will be shared.

Several of the talks also directly address patient and medication safety and improving communication among physicians, patients and other health care personnel.

Discussions will also focus on safe and effective use of chemotherapy and pharmacology safety issues, with talks by Arti Hurria M.D., director of the Cancer and Aging Research Program at the City of Hope National Medical Center and Stuart M. Lichtman, M.D., Professor of Medicine, 65+ Geriatric Clinical Program at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center.

John A. Abraham, M.D., Chairman of the Division of Orthopedic Oncology at the Rothman Institute at Jefferson, will also speak about managing orthopedic issues in geriatric oncology patients.

"This symposium is an opportunity for players in the geriatric medicine and oncology, surgery and radiation fields to come together and highlight the innovative discoveries and best practices we believe will be important for the next generation of treatment and therapeutics in patients," said Richard Pestell, M.D., Ph.D., director of the KCC and Professor and Chair of the Department of Cancer Biology at Jefferson Medical College of Thomas Jefferson University.

Benson Henderson takes UFC lightweight title in classic decision

Benson Henderson won the UFC's lightweight belt by winning a decision 49-46, 48-47, 49-46 over Frankie Edgar at Saitama Super Arena in Japan on Saturday. His cardio and strength were too much for the smaller Edgar.

The two lightweights came out with great movement and crazy strikes in the first round, just as you would expect from two smaller guys. Edgar stalked Henderson down, but Henderson did not back away from the fight. He threw several kicks, and Edgar caught them.

In the second round, Edgar continued to move around the cage and cut angles, meeting Henderson with leg kicks. Again, Edgar caught Henderson's kicks, but Henderson adapted in this round and threw a jab, even with his leg in Edgar's hands. Henderson cut Edgar's left eye with his jab, and it swelled as the fight went on. Late in the second, Edgar got a takedown, and when he moved off Henderson, "Smooth" landed a perfect upkick. Edgar fell to the ground. He survived, but Henderson did serious damage to Edgar's nose.

When the third round began, Edgar's nose was swollen and pouring blood. Henderson pounced when Edgar slipped on a kick, and he took Edgar to the ground. Henderson tried to take Edgar's back, but couldn't because of how Edgar moved away. Late in the round, Edgar got a takedown.

Henderson started the fourth round with few marks on his face, while Edgar's was busted up and swollen. Halfway through the round, Edgar went for a takedown. Henderson pulled guard and caught Edgar in a guillotine. Though it was deep, Edgar was able to pop his head out.

Before the fifth and final round, Henderson's corner asked, "Do you got five good minutes?" Henderson answered, "I've got 15."

Henderson showed that freshness as he landed several shots and shook off the ones Edgar threw. Edgar continued to try for a takedown, but Henderson shook him off. He moved around the cage as if it was the first minute of the bout, not the 25th.

After the bout, Henderson thanked a former opponent for the upkick that changed the course of the fight.

"I gotta thank [fellow UFC lightweight] Cowboy Cerrone for that because he landed it on me, and that hurt bad."

Henderson previously held a title belt in the WEC, and now he has UFC gold secure around his waist. His well-rounded game was too much for Edgar. The fact that Henderson could have gone another three rounds spoke volumes to the judges.

Tuna Casserole for the Oscars party

Here?s a great traditional recipe for the casserole.

Yield: Makes 8-10 servings

Nonstick vegetable oil spray

1/4 cup dry white wine

4 teaspoons cornstarch

1/3 cup all purpose flour

1 1/2 cups organic milk

1 cup canned chicken broth

2 teaspoons minced fresh thyme or 1 teaspoon dried

2 tablespoons cream cheese

2 6-ounce cans Italian? solid white tuna packed in oil, undrained

1 cup frozen petite peas, unthawed

8 ounces farfalle (bow-tie) pasta

1/2 cup crushed baked potato chips (about 1 ounce)

Preheat oven to 400?F. Spray 8 x 8 x 2-inch glass baking dish with vegetable oil spray. Whisk wine and cornstarch in small bowl to blend. Whisk flour in heavy medium saucepan to remove any lumps. Gradually add milk to flour, whisking until smooth. Add broth and thyme and whisk over medium heat until liquid thickens and boils, about 4 minutes. Add cornstarch mixture and whisk until liquid boils and is smooth, about 1 minute. Remove from heat. Add Neufch?tel cheese and whisk until melted. Stir in both cans of tuna with their liquid and frozen peas. Season to taste with salt and pepper.

Meanwhile, cook pasta in large pot of boiling salted water until tender but still firm to bite, stirring occasionally. Drain pasta. Return to pot.

Add tuna mixture to pasta; stir to blend well. Transfer to prepared baking dish. Sprinkle with potato chips. Bake until top is golden and sauce bubbles around edges of dish, about 25 minutes.

Quran burning: What is the respectful way to dispose of Islam's holy book?

Thousands protested today the burning of Qurans and other religious texts at a US military base in Afghanistan.?

Thousands of protesters rallied outside the Bagram military base in Afghanistan today after NATO and US officials reportedly burned Qurans, the Muslim holy text. The Qurans, along with other books, were removed from a library at a nearby detention center reportedly due to extremist messages penned inside the books and exchanged among detainees, reports the Associated Press. US and NATO representatives apologized and promised an investigation into the event.

The burning of the Quran has?angered Afghans in the past, sparking deadly protests in 2010 and 2011. But if discarding a Quran is necessary, there are respectful and acceptable ways to do so, scholars say.

It is important to give a Quran a proper burial, says Omid Safi, professor of Islamic studies at the University of North Carolina and author of ?Memories of Muhammad.? Any text containing ?the name of God is sacred in Islam. God is revealed through scripture, and anything associated with writing it has a religious significance, Mr. Safi says.

One could literally bury the Quran, ideally in a place with little foot traffic. Another option is to put the book in a flowing body of water, either letting it sink or be carried away. Regardless of the method, treating the book?s destruction with respect is paramount. Safi likens it to a poor man?s funeral, where the book might be wrapped in a shroud before being placed in the ground and mourned.

Burning the Quran, however, is also an accepted practice.

?People often ask, ?if it?s OK for Muslims to burn the Quran, then why isn?t it OK for the US military to do it??? Safi says. ?That?s where the question of symbolism is important.?

Some say erasing the names of God and his messengers prior to burning the Quran makes it acceptable, but Safi says it?s even simpler than that. It comes down to context: Burning the text in a dumpster with trash on a US military base feels less respectful than treating the disposal with reverence in a burial or sacred burning.?

Safi finds one analogy particularly helpful: The Quran is to Islam as Jesus is to Christianity. ?In an Islamic universe ... the word becomes not a person, but a book,? he says. ?For a Muslim to see the Quran burnt not as a way of burial, it would look and feel like someone burning Jesus, or a crucifix.?

But contextualizing today?s protests goes beyond simple reverence for the Quran, Safi says. ?Bagram airbase is one of the central places of US military presence in Afghanistan ... [and] between 600 and 700 Afghans have been detained or are being detained there for years and years.? ?

Safi says this isn?t so much a theological debate on how to dispose of the Quran properly, but a charged conversation around a military force ?that?s being looked at as an occupying force ... [A]n unlawful, violent force.?

British PM Cameron issues soccer racism warning

LONDON - British Prime Minister David Cameron pledged to prevent the "dark days" of racism returning to soccer during a summit he hosted on Wednesday.

The Downing Street gathering of politicians, soccer leaders and anti-racism campaigners follows high-profile racism cases this season involving players and fans in Premier League matches.

"We simply cannot brush this under the carpet," Cameron wrote in Wednesday's edition of The Sun newspaper. "I've no doubt that football will crack this problem ? and the government stands ready to do anything it can to help."

The government announced Wednesday it will give $4.7 million toward the English Football Association's new coaching center in a bid to encourage more people from ethnic minorities to become managers. There are no black managers in the Premier League.

Cameron said Wednesday's meeting is designed to "reaffirm our vigilance against racism ? and all forms of discrimination."

The most serious case will be tried in court, with Chelsea defender John Terry charged with racially abusing Queens Park Rangers defender Anton Ferdinand during a match in October. Terry was stripped of the England captaincy ? a move opposed by coach Fabio Capello, who quit in protest.

"There was a time when football in our country was badly infected with racism. It took great effort from everyone involved in the game to kick it out," Cameron said. "It's an achievement not every country has managed to make ... but recently racism has come back into the spotlight with cases involving some of the most famous players in football, one of which has led to the resignation of the England manager.

"We will not let recent events drag us back to the bad old days of the past."

Liverpool, the 18-time English champion, came under fire for its support of striker Luis Suarez when he was banned for eight matches for racially abusing Manchester United defender Patrice Evra.

Liverpool only apologized earlier this month after a widely condemned case in which Suarez refused to shake hands with Evra, who is black, in their first meeting since the confrontation during an October match.

"I want to be sure that when my children see their sporting heroes play, they aren't let down by foul, racist or violent behavior on or off the pitch," Cameron wrote. "Footballers can be great role models who the public admire. The power of sport ? and sporting personalities ? to do good is immense.

"But it can also go the other way. If children see bad behavior on the television or at the stadium, they may copy it and reproduce it in the playground."

COMMENTARY: Outdoor Rec proves 'nothing to do' is no excuse at ...

Since I arrived at Fort Bliss last year, I?ve heard a lot of people complain that there is nothing to do on or around this post. For the first few months, I was inclined to agree with them. Then I met Kenny Coppedge and the Outdoor Recreation staff, and my mind has been changed.

In the last two weeks, I?ve done a few things I had never done before thanks to the Outdoor Recreation crew. I went rappelling in the Franklin Mountains and snowboarding at Ski Apache near Ruidoso, N.M. So much for nothing to do at Fort Bliss.

If the only way you have ever rappelled is off of a tower, then you should most definitely try it on a sheer cliff face. Not only was the hike up a good burn for those of you that crave a little physical exertion, but the height was about double that of any tower I?ve been on and the view was absolutely amazing. Of course, rappelling is not the only activity offered in the Franklin Mountains. Outdoor Recreation also does climbing and hiking trips.

OK, I get it. Maybe heights aren?t your thing. I met a few Soldiers during the rappelling trip that had a vertigo attack. It happens to the best of us. So, I?m going to offer an alternative or two.

If you were born in the Deep South, like me, you probably never had a chance to try out winter sports such as snowboarding, skiing or snowshoeing. Outdoor Recreation can once again help you out. They offer trips to Ski Apache where you can ski or snowboard, or, if you are more inclined to just take in the scenery without the falling, snowshoe. If you have never done any of these, I can?t recommend them enough.

And the Soldiers who prefer to stay a little closer to home and just have a few hours to kill on the weekends, come out and play some paintball. The course is fast-paced and balanced, Outdoor Recreation has all the equipment you need to play, and the prices are the cheapest I?ve ever seen.

These are only a few of the things that Outdoor Recreation has to offer, and I?m not going to cover every one of them because I want you to go talk to Kenny, John, Kayla, Greg, Roman or Sgt. Mike Ortiz over at Biggs Park once the new building is complete or call them at 744-2415.

With all of the programs and adventures awaiting through Outdoor Recreation, the question isn?t why do it, it?s why not.
