Sleuth Keeps His Good Eye On Mexico City's Crime

In the crowded heart of the Mexican capital, a fictional one-eyed private investigator shares a dingy flat with a flock of ducks and a rotating cast of lovers.

The central character in Paco Ignacio Taibo II's crime novels is Hector Belascoaran Shayne, a former engineer who got a "certificate in detection" through a correspondence course. Belascoaran is a cynical, bumbling private eye who marvels at the chaotic street life unfolding around him in Mexico City.

Belascoaran doesn't have a car. He calls himself a "street" detective. Usually he rides the overcrowded subway, squeezed between drunks and office workers and an interminable stream of vendors selling pens, Kleenex and balls made of super putty.

Taibo's detective novels veer in and out of reality. Historical figures mix with fictional characters. Things happen or maybe they didn't. One novel, The Uncomfortable Dead, is actually co-written with Subcomandante Marcos, the former leader of the Zapatista Army of National Liberation. And the story includes a fictional cameo appearance by Marcos himself.

In No Happy Ending the omniscient narrator says of Belascoaran, "His only way to survive was to accept the chaos and become one with it. Take yourself lightly, but the city seriously. Mexico City, that porcupine filled with quills and soft wrinkles. Damn, he was in love with this place. Another impossible love on his list."

The Only 'Real' City

"There are some almost real cities like New York or Amsterdam. But the real one is this. This is the city," Taibo says.

The writer's Mexico City is a city of sharp contrasts. It's a city with strict smog rules barring certain cars from driving certain days of the week yet each morning hulking, battered busses spew plumes of black smoke out their tailpipes.

This bustling metropolis of 20 million people is home to both the richest man in the world and peasants who don't even have running water. Unlike the urban elite or the party people, Hector Belascoaran Shayne lives in a dark, violent version of Mexico City.

"We experience different cities, linked by the abuses of power and fear, corruption, and the eternal threat of descent into the jungle that hides in the system; it pops up regularly to remind us that we are fragile, that we are alone, that one day we will be fodder for the buzzards," Taibo writes in Return to the Same City.

Present-Day Mexico In Fiction

Taibo hasn't written a new Belascoaran novel since the current drug war began in Mexico six years ago. He plans to eventually, but for now he calls President Felipe Calderon's war against organized crime "complicated ground" for fiction.

"The narco war has changed everything in relations between society, crime, insecurity, law and order," he says. "These deep changes in society make you as a writer to rethink the whole thing."

As the death toll from the drug war ratchets higher, the Mexican capital has come to be viewed as a sanctuary from the violence.

"Mexico City is the safest city in Mexico. Everybody says that. I even believe it. And it's true. Why? The narcos have created paradise here," Taibo says. "They can live here but [they don't] work here. It's the resting city of the narcos. What is this? Very complex city, I love it."

Sidewalk cafes, mariachis and gruesome newspaper headlines make up the city. It's a great place to be a fiction writer, Taibo says, because everyday he's forced to deal with complexity, economic inequality, corruption, environmental destruction and pollution.

At one point he describes an exhausted Belascoaran peering out at the city and seeing "a city that was trying to hide itself in the smog."

In Taibo's hands, the Mexican capital becomes a magical metropolis where anything can happen. For instance at the end of No Happy Ending, Belascoaran is killed off, but fortunately for his fans, the eccentric, one-eyed detective pops back to life in the next novel.

Protesters tried to prevent the eviction of an Ecuadorian family unable to maintain its mortgage payments in Oviedo, northern Spain. Jorge Cordero, his wife Patricia and five-month-old daughter Amanda were evicted because they could not keep up mortgage payments to the Cajastur bank. Seventeen people locked themselves in the apartment with the owner and around 200 people gathered outside to try and stop the eviction. Jorge's wife and baby daughter were not present in the apartment during the eviction. Twenty people were arrested. The plight of over one million Spanish people facing a crippling mortgage debt is increasingly attracting public support as an anti-eviction movement places pressure on politicians to act.

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) ? The Indiana Pacers have parted ways with Larry Bird.

Owner Herb Simon announced the move Wednesday, one day before the NBA draft. He said Bird will stay on for the draft, when the Pacers are scheduled to pick No. 26 overall in the first round.

The 55-year-old Bird was the Pacers coach from 1997-2000, taking the team to its only NBA Finals appearance that final year, before returning to the front office in 2003. He took full control as president of basketball decisions after the 2007-08 season, when Donnie Walsh left to become the New York Knicks' president.

Walsh is returning as the Pacers' president. Kevin Pritchard, the director of player personnel, is being promoted to general manager, replacing David Morway, who resigned Tuesday.

Bird said health issues were among the reasons for his departure.

"I just think it's time," he said.

Bird had said just a month ago that he wanted to stay and expressed interest in a three-year deal rather than the annual "handshake" agreements he had with Simon. Bird recently was named the NBA Executive of the Year after building a tough, young team that lost to eventual champion Miami in six games in the playoffs.

The former Indiana State star won three MVP awards and three NBA titles during his Hall of Fame career with Boston.

More recently TV viewers in Australia, Japan, America, Canada and the UK have been treated to the series Psychic Detectives or Psychic Investigators (the program name changed according to the country in which it was shown).

The programme follows cases in which real-life psychics try to help the police with their investigations. The series isn't too popular with sceptics who claim the psychics involved have made exaggerated claims of events. Whilst this might make good TV the series raises some questions; can psychics really help solve crimes and do the police ever resort to using psychics to help their investigations?.

Psychic Sleuths, a study of the subject by Joe Nickell PhD suggests that psychic detectives were not particularly effective; many gave uselessly vague information that could be made to fit the case after it was solved but that would have been no use to the police investigating the matter whatsoever.

Some cases however were more intriguing than the others. In 1980 a nurse went missing in LA, at the time an ordinary woman who was not a professional psychic claimed to have a vision of the nurse's body. She was able to point the area on a map where the unfortunate nurse's remains were and even arrived at the scene before the police. Nickell claims the woman could have found out about the murder site before the police as a local man had already boasted about killing the nurse. Whatever the truth of the situation a number of people have claimed their psychic abilities have allowed them to assist police in solving cases.

Most police departments say that they do not keep records regarding such activity or seek out such help. Nevertheless, there is some evidence that despite their reticence the police aren't adverse to seeking a little extra-sensory help from time to time. One former Detective Senior Constable of the Australian police; Jeffrey Little, has said police do use psychic detectives "even though they officially say they don't".

It seems the police in NSW have used psychic Debbie Malone on a number of cases. While no evidence she has supplied has solved murders or missing investigations on it's own she has been asked to corroborate theories. Little, in reference to one case she assisted on, felt her description of what happened was "exceptional", other officers also had been impressed by her assistance, while yet other NSW officers felt she had not helped solve any cases. Sergeant Gae Crea and Detective Sergeant Damian Loone, state that she did not give them anything the police and the public didn't already know.

Perhaps more interesting are the cases where the police did not listen and clearly should have. In 2001, the body of Thomas Braun was located by Perth based Aboriginal clairvoyant Leanna Adams in Western Australia. Police had initially been unable to find the body. Braun's had been told to contact Adams, an Aboriginal psychic who lived in Perth. The Braun Family had requested police to conduct a search based on Adams' directions but they had not assisted. Adams went to Alice Springs in the Northern Territory, and took the family members directly to Braun's remains, a spot high on a ridge west of the town, some 20 kilometres out. The remains were not immediately identifiable but the police later confirmed the remains to be his using DNA testing.

In the UK the Police have also officially pooh-poohed the idea of using psychic help and in 2009 the Metropolitan Police categorically denied using psychics to assist them with their cases. Later, emails were published that suggested they had used psychic helpers on investigations. The shame faced Met issued a statement which read; "We do not identify people we may or may not speak with in connection with inquiries. We are not prepared to discuss this further."

Actress Hilary Swank helps Bucharest stray dogs

BUCHAREST, Romania BUCHAREST, Romania (AP) ? Thousands of Romanian street dogs have found a friend in Oscar-winning actress Hilary Swank.

Swank, who won for her portrayal of a waitress-turned-boxer in "Million Dollar Baby," visited Bucharest last week and showed a different kind of skill: fighting for animal rights.

Swank, who says travel has been her best education, rarely leaves home without Kai, a devoted Jack Russell stray she rescued in Los Angeles.

In the Romanian capital on Friday, she visited projects set up by the animal welfare foundation Vier Pfoten that encourage interaction between stray dogs and institutionalized people.

Bucharest has 35,000 strays and their fate has sparked a fierce debate here. Some believe they should be put down, others advocate putting the dogs in shelters, while others want strays to be sterilized.

Swank spoke to The Associated Press about her devotion to animals, her belief in sterilization and the ways street dogs can help disadvantaged people.

'I believe that is so healing to these kids who don't trust people anymore," she said. "The unconditional love of an animal is very healing and teaches them about not just unconditional love but about a relationship, about responsibility, about anger management."

Swank said she is starting a U.S. charity called Hilaroo to bring needy children and animals together. The charity combines her name and that of her late dog, Karoo.

'I've seen firsthand how it changes the path of the soul, for the animal and for the child," she said.

Visiting a retirement home, she talked about one special dog that changed the life of an elderly woman.

"There was a woman didn't get out of bed, and after a few weeks of the dog coming to visit she's up walking," she said. "The dog literally got her out of bed."

I used to work for an operational consulting firm. (And yes, The Goal was required reading when you joined.) We would travel a lot, and when you are waiting at airport security with a group of operations consultants, you naturally discuss how to improve the rate at which travelers pass through security. The worst offense is when the TSA has only one person checking IDs, and two or more X-ray lines running, so that the X-ray machines sometimes sit idle. This seems like a terrible staffing choice because you are bottlenecked at a step that is very inexpensive to expand. Meanwhile, you have let the most expensive step (the X-rays) sit idle, wasting the cost of the machine and of the two to three person staff. Much better to simply shift one more person to check IDs, right?

Social Media Defined

My friends at People First of Nevada reminded me last week during our webinar, ?Social Media for Grassroots Advocacy?, that not everybody is familiar with all of the social media tools that are available today. I was describing the ?Social Media Landscape? illustrated in the great infographic from FredCavazza.net when the questions starting coming?Can you please define a blog/microblog? What?s a podcast? Livecasting?

So, for those of you who may also be wondering, I?ve compile the definitions of some of the main types of social media. Here you go:

Social Networking Site

According to pcmag.com, a social networking site is a website that provides a virtual community for people to share their daily activities with family and friends, or to share their interest in a particular topic, or to increase their circle of acquaintances. There are dating sites, friendship sites, sites with a business purpose and hybrids that offer a combination of these. Facebook is the leading personal site, and LinkedIn is the leading business site. Globally, hundreds of millions of people have joined one or more social sites.

Members create their own online ?profile? with biographical data, pictures and any other information they choose to post. They communicate with each other by making their latest thoughts public in a blog-like format or via e-mail, instant messaging, voice or videoconferencing to selected members. The service lets members find and invite other members into their personal network (to ?friend? them) as well as invite friends of friends. A photo sharing capability may also be provided.

Blog/Microblog

In simple terms, a blog is a web site, where you write about anything you want on an ongoing basis. (You are reading on right now!!) New posts show up at the top, so your visitors can read what?s new. Then they comment on it, link to it, email you, or not. ?A blog can be a personal diary or a daily pulpit. It can be a collaborative space, a political soapbox, or a breaking-news outlet with a collection of links. A blog contains your own private thoughts and memos to the world. Your blog is whatever you want it to be. There are millions of them, in all shapes and sizes, and there are no real rules.

Twitter

A microblog on the other hand, according to pcmag.com, is a blog that contains brief entries about the daily activities of an individual or company. Created to keep friends, colleagues and customers up-to-date, small images may be included as well as brief audio and video clips. The most popular microblog is Twitter.

Podcast

Chappy Sinclair from Demand Media defines a podcast as a series of audio or video files that are distributed over the Internet. Podcasts are usually episodic and specialize on a specific topic. Podcasts are intended to be entertaining or helpful and are usually no longer than one hour.

Streaming

Sam Costello with About.com Guide says on the Internet, there are two ways to listen to or watch audio and video files. The first way is to download the file to your computer and watch the file after it resides there. The other way to do it is to start a progressive download of the file, where the file isn?t downloaded to your computer in a lasting way. This is called streaming.

For instance, if you listen to a radio station online, you will stream the music, since you?re listening live and couldn?t download all the songs that they play. Instead, your computer connects to the radio station and receives an ongoing audio feed, or stream, with the radio station?s programming.

When you stream a file, you will get to listen to or watch it, but won?t have the file on your computer to do things with later. Some websites offer streaming as a way to make their content available, but not let people have it without buying it.

Livecasting

According to technicavita.org, by definition livecasting refers to any kind of audio or visual sharing that is done over the internet.?Skype?is probably the number one recognized platform for multimedia livecasting which enables users to have a life voice conversation utilizing voice over IP technology (VOIP) or projecting live video and audio streams in real time. Web cameras and teleconferencing by this method has become a preferred method of communication for businesses and has increasingly become daily use technology for the mainstream technology user.
