Utah woman accused of theft claims to be Cosby kid (omg!)

PROVO, Utah (AP) ? Police in Utah say a 32-year-old woman arrested on suspicion of shoplifting falsely told officers she co-starred with Bill Cosby on "The Cosby Show."

Police say Leah Efay Davis of Provo, Utah, was in a J.C. Penney store when they say she put several items into a bag and walked out of the store. Security stopped her and found she had about $600 worth of goods.

Authorities say she told officers she played the role of Rudy Huxtable, but actress Keisha Knight Pulliam actually played Rudy, the youngest daughter on the 1980s sit-com.

Court records say Davis also claimed she owned the mall in which she was arrested.

The Salt Lake Tribune (http://bit.ly/wvYewn) reports Davis was charged with a felony count of retail theft and a misdemeanor trespassing charge.

Nigerian anger heats up as petrol prices rocket (Reuters)

ABUJA (Reuters) ? Nigerian motorists and unions vented their anger on Monday at a sudden more than doubling of fuel prices, a day after government subsidies were removed in a sweeping economic reform that could trigger mass protests.

Opposition leaders, unionists and local rights groups have condemned the move by the state's fuel regulator, which they say will heave up prices at a time when many Nigerians, the majority of whom live on less than $2 per day, already find fuel too expensive.

Many fuel stations in the capital Abuja and main commercial city Lagos were shut on Monday while they waited to figure out how to adjust their prices. Those that were open were jammed with queues and selling at prices of up to 150 naira ($0.92) per liter, up from a fixed price of 60 naira before.

"This is a bad New Year present from the government," said David Akpe, a motorist at pump in Abuja, as a queue of about 30 cars formed behind him. "What next?"

The measure risks bringing public wrath down on President Goodluck Jonathan, who says it is needed to reform the economy.

"Don't push us to the street; for we went to the street to make you president and would not like to go to the street to remove you as president!" the Conference of Nigerian Political Parties (CNPP), an opposition umbrella group, warned.

Responding to a call to demonstrate, about 500 people marched through the northern city of Kano with placards saying 'No to subsidy removal' and 'Jonathan wants to kill Nigerians'.

A few dozen protesters also occupied the area around Eagle Square in central Abuja. In a sign tolerance was likely to be limited for such protests in the capital, police dispersed people with teargas and made some arrests, a Reuters witness saw.

There was no major organized response.

Petroleum sector workers also rejected the price hike.

"The Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN) rejects (it) as totally unacceptable and a crass display of bad faith," they said in a statement on Monday.

"We therefore urge all Nigerians to ... begin immediate mobilization for the struggle ahead."

LAWMAKERS UNDECIDED

Lawmakers have been divided on the subsidy issue, leaving the future of the measure potentially still in doubt.

Senate spokesman senator Enyinnaya Abaribe said in a statement the Senate had not yet ruled on the subsidy removal, so it was still open to debate.

The subsidies were left out of the 2012 budget, which has yet to be voted on by both houses. To restore the subsidies, lawmakers would have to add them to the budget and find some way of paying for them, probably by cutting expenditure elsewhere.

"While it is true that there was no provision for subsidy in the 2012 budget proposal, the Senate ... is yet to reach a consensus on the matter," Abaribe said. Such a decision would "take cognizance of the general mood," he added.

Many economists say the fuel subsidies were hugely corrupt, wasteful and bled money from the treasury into the pockets of rich fuel importers. Some Nigerians see sense in ending them.

"The people against the subsidy removal are the people who have been milking Nigeria," said retired banker Peter Madu. "The labor unions are just being selfish."

But the unpopular policy of removing subsidies remains a political bombshell, as most Nigerians see the subsidies as the only benefit they derive from living in an oil rich country.

Nigeria produces more than 2 million barrels per day of crude oil, but a lack of investment in refineries and infrastructure means almost all of it is exported, while refined products such as gasoline have to be imported at great cost.

Going ahead with the plan will save the Treasury more than 1 trillion naira ($6.13 billion) in 2012, according to the government, which was heavily criticized by the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for the wasteful use of public funds.

BC-FBN--Steelers-Browns Folo, FBN

BC-FBN--Steelers-Browns Folo,1046,927Steelers lose Mendenhall in season-ending winAP Photo OHTD105, OHMD101, OHAS103, OHAS106, OHMD107, OHMD108Eds: Steelers 13, Browns 9. With AP Photos.By TOM WITHERSAP Sports Writer

CLEVELAND (AP) ? Rashard Mendenhall leaned on his crutches and bowed his head.

The pain wasn't unbearable for Pittsburgh's leading rusher. However, the thought of missing the AFC playoffs might have been too much to handle.

Mendenhall injured his right knee in the first quarter Sunday and had to watch the Steelers stumble their way to a 13-9 win over the Cleveland Browns, who kept it close but again couldn't come up with the big play to pull off the upset.

Isaac Redman replaced Mendenhall and scored a touchdown, quarterback Ben Roethlisberger made enough big plays on his fragile left ankle and the Steelers (12-4) survived a last-play heave through the falling snow and into the end zone to beat the Browns (4-12) for the 16th time in 17 games.

Pittsburgh didn't get the help it needed to get a first-round bye and will travel to Denver to face Tim Tebow and the Broncos next Sunday.

And the Steelers will likely be without Mendenhall, who went down after a 5-yard gain in the first quarter and didn't return.

"It's not good, of course, when a guy goes down in open grass and is not touched by anyone," Steelers coach Mike Tomlin said. "Experience tells me that in general that's not good."

Tomlin said Mendenhall would have tests after the team got back to Pittsburgh. But the Steelers already seemed resigned to not having Mendenhall for their wild-card game ? or maybe at all.

"You should anticipate that he won't be participating next week," Tomlin said.

Mendenhall, who came in needing 110 yards for his third straight 1,000-yard season, was hurt on the final play of the first quarter. He went down without being touched and immediately grabbed his right knee. It was apparent by the reaction of Pittsburgh's offensive players that they knew the injury was serious.

As Mendenhall walked slowly to the sideline, he slapped hands with a few teammates before being examined on a table behind Pittsburgh's bench.

Roethlisberger didn't see Mendenhall get hurt, but said he was upset that some Browns fans cheered his teammate's misfortune.

"I'm really disappointed," said Roethlisberger, who improved to 14-1 in his career against Cleveland. "I know these Browns fans are passionate, but when you hear fans cheer when a guy goes down that's really disappointing. I don't care who it is or if you really hate that team."

Redman scored on a 7-yard run in the third quarter and rushed for 92 yards.

But he fumbled twice in the second half and the Steelers had to hold their breath on the last play when Browns quarterback Seneca Wallace floated a pass into a crowd in the back of the end zone. Pittsburgh safety Troy Polamalu came over the top and got his hand on the ball before Browns rookie wide receiver Greg Little could grab it, allowing the Steelers to escape.

The Browns (4-12) lost their last six games and nine of 10 under first-year coach Pat Shurmur. Cleveland was competitive ? the Browns lost their final three games by a combined 13 points ? but wound up with one less win than last season and went 0-6 in the division.

"It's not enough wins," Shurmur said. "I want this game to be the last game of the year where we're talking about other things, about where we're playing our playoff game, who we're playing against, those types of things. We've got to win games and I'm obviously not at peace with that.

"Now we'll get to the business of doing what we have to do to get our team as right as we can make it for next season."

Shaun Suisham made two field goals for the Steelers, who won 12 games for the second year in a row, something they haven't done since 1978-79.

Motivated by losing last season's Super Bowl to Green Bay, Pittsburgh opened the season by getting blown out by Baltimore. But the Steelers recovered and will now make another run at a Lombardi Trophy.

"We have a lot of veterans who know what January football is all about," said safety Ryan Clark. "Now's the time to go play it. We kind of limped in and it would have been huge to get a bye and get guys healthy. Now we have to go and play better on the road. I believe this team can win anywhere."

Phil Dawson kicked three field goals for all of Cleveland's points.

Steelers wide receiver Hines Ward had five catches and became the eighth player in NFL history to reach 1,000 career catches.

Ward grabbed a shovel pass in the fourth quarter, and although it lost 3 yards, it got him to the milestone.

"It's the happiest negative-yard catch I've ever had," Ward said. "I always try to put team ahead of personal goals. But 1,000 catches and over 12,000 yards is not bad considering I was a third-round pick."

Notes: Wallace went just 16 of 41 and lost all three starts filling in for McCoy. He said afterward that he wants an opportunity to win the starting job next season. ... Steelers TE Heath Miller had 2 catches, giving him 336 for his career, one more than Hall of Famer Lynn Swann. ... Dawson finished 24 of 29 in his 13th season with Cleveland. "I gave my heart and soul to this team this year," he said. ... Browns RB Peyton Hillis injured his knee while gaining 30 yards on 10 carries. It's unclear if Cleveland will try to sign him as a free agent after a drama-filled season.

Oil price to end 2011 near $100 a barrel

New York ? The price of oil will finish 2011 about 8 percent higher, after concerns about tighter global supplies dominated energy markets throughout the year.

Benchmark crude, which on Friday fell 30 cents to $99.35 per barrel in New York, started the year at $91.38 per barrel. Prices surged in February as unrest in Libya cut off 1.5 million barrels of oil exports. After a summertime slump, they rose to $100 per barrel following threats from Iran to close key shipping lanes in the Persian Gulf.

Rising oil prices drove gasoline prices higher as well. Motorists in many U.S. cities had to pay more than $4 per gallon earlier this year.

Pump prices have since dropped and were at a national average of $3.27 per gallon on Friday.

Woman hears buzz of tattoo needle for first time

By Ree Hines

Sarah Churman was born deaf, but earlier this year, at the age of 29, she underwent a procedure that suddenly allowed her to hear. Soon after, Churman decided to celebrate the life-changing event with a new tattoo at Ami James' "NY Ink" hotspot, the Wooster St. Social Club.

See Churman share her story with tattoo artist Tim Hendricks in this sneak peek from TLC. ?

"(My husband's) mom came to us one day and she said, 'Listen, I'm going to pay for the sugery.' It absolutely broke my heart that his widowed mother was going to cash in her savings and didn't think twice," a teary-eyed Churman explained to Hendricks as he inked a pinup girl along her side. "As soon as the words were out of her mouth, I called and started setting stuff up and told them give me the soonest date they've got."

If her story sounds familiar, it should. Churman rose to viral video fame after her husband uploaded a clip to Youtube which featured her reacting to the very first sounds she'd ever heard beyond vibrations and some noises an earlier hearing aid provided.

She also visited TODAY in October and explained just how profound her experience has been.

To see more of Churman's moving story, and the completed tattoo she got to commemorate it, tune into to the season premiere of "NY Ink" Thursday night at 9 p.m. on TLC.

Have you followed Churman's story over the past few months? Will you watch her spot on "NY Ink"? Tell on our Facebook page.
